Spudnuts

Spudnuts...the universal language of love!

If you are from Charlottesville or the surrounding area, you know Spudnuts were the donut of the century.  Sadly, this iconic establishment closed in 2017.

Police have been ridiculed through out history for their love of donuts--but the reality is nurses and doctors have them beat.  As a young nurse I learned two important hospital rules--coffee must be so strong you can't see the bottom of the cup and Spudnuts  were the donut of choice.  My introduction to Spudnuts came when I worked in the ED in the late 80's-early 90's.  On night shift, magical boxes of Spudnuts would appear in the break room.  The left overs from the day were brought to the ultimate group of donutovores.  As a rotator to nights this was a bright spot and enough glucose to keep me awake for a few hours.  I do think there were full-time night shifters who worked the shift purely for the donuts.  There was a rumor of one nurse who ate a full dozen in a donut eating contest...I was not able to confirm this rumor.

When I went to work in the Medical ICU...Spudnuts followed me.  However, the donut consumption was more civilized.  Typically the Attending physician would pick up a dozen or two for Sunday morning rounds.  They were just as good, but the coffee was weaker.  In recent years, the flow of Spudnuts diminished a bit as Krispy Kreme, Dunkin, and other establishments moved into town.  Bagels evolved to be the carbohydrate of choice and we started drinking latte's or other $5 cups of coffee.   Spudnuts were saved for the special occasions...like "I'm sorry" or "I didn't cook for the potluck so here are some Spudnuts."

I am among a privileged group who enjoyed these delectable delights and will sorely miss worthy indulgence!  I felt it appropriate to paint a picture to keep the memory alive.  As I painted this, my husband and I debated which donut was the best....the conclusion the round ones!

Have a great weekend!
